The first night of play for the Fall Session will be Sunday, September 21st. The session will be 16 weeks long with November 30th and December 28th off for Holidays, leaving 14 actual weeks of play. Playoffs will be held the weeks of January 11th and 18th, allowing Spring Session to also have 14 weeks of play. While some people feel that the Fall Session should end with the calendar year, like the memberships, this would create a big imbalance in the length of Fall & Spring Sessions.

APA Singles Tournaments!

There�s more than one way to get to Vegas. The traditional way is for your team to win, but you can also get there through the Singles Program. For a $15 entry fee, you can participate in an 8-person tournament (handicapped). The winner of each 8-person board advances to one of the Regional Tournaments(NO additional entry fee). The Regional Event winners advance to Vegas, where the minimum payout is $200 worth of cash / prizes. Before I schedule some of these events, I would like to know how many players want to be involved, where you�d like the events to be held, and when. To participate, players must have at least 10 matches played in the last two years. Let me know if you want to participate! Let me know if you want to run some of these events!

Scotch Doubles and Jack & Jill Doubles!

Yet another way to get to Vegas is through the Doubles Tournaments. Typically, this would be a tournament which includes 16 teams of 2 players each with a maximum combined skill level of 10. I�d like to run these events monthly if there�s enough interest. As the event names suggest, the Jack & Jill Doubles Tournaments require one man and one woman while the regular 8 Ball Scotch Doubles Tournaments can include any two players with a combined skill level limit of 10. Beginning with the Spring Session (January) 2009, for every APA Pool League Team in your location at the end of each session, you can get a chance at being drawn for a trip to Vegas! Envelope Turn In For Fall

After September 1st, the weekly Bonus Point will be awarded to teams mailing in their envelopes or handing them to Mary or myself directly. I�d like to begin 2-way mailing, but to do so requires that the envelopes be sent out Wednesday afternoon to ensure that everyone gets theirs in time for the match. Unfortunately, it�s rare to have enough of them in by then to keep the point count up to date. If having envelopes mailed directly to your house each week is something you'd like, encourage your fellow Captains to get theirs turned in faster.

PLAYOFFS!

The Summer Session has ended and it's time for Division Playoffs! The team with the highest point count was Beer Beir, which makes them automatically eligible for Vegas Cup 2009 (June, 2009).

The next three placed teams and a randomly drawn Wildcard will compete in Playoffs for the remaining slot this session. Lasalle Bar, Capt-N-Caveman, 8-Ball Ink, and wildcard team Pet My Kitty will compete this weekend.

Lasalle will host Pet My Kitty at Lasalle and Capt-N-Caveman will host 8-Ball Ink at The Gravel Pit Sunday, September 7th. The winners of that round will face one another the following week.

There is definately some skill involved in the shot... and it requires a good bit of luck. But I have to admit it happens more by luck than it does anything else.

There is a proven technique for creating 8-ball movement and I encourage everyone to try while practicing over a week or two. You'll see it works (or at least generates better movemnet of the 8 - IMHO). I'm left handed so this example is from my perspective... reverse it if you're right handed.

Place the cue ball about 3-6 inches in from the rail and about 2 inches back from the head-string. You can play with moving it around in that are to get the best movement.

Using as level a cue stick as possible strike the second ball in the rack with low center English. It's important that the cue is level. Any elevation will drive the cue ball into the table and make it skip. Should it hit the 2nd ball in the air you'll be chasing the cue ball across the floor.

Break hard, but don't kill it. I find that beyond a certain strength the less movement I get. The eight usually moves toward one of the side pockets for me, occasionally back to me in a corner. Rarely into one of the back corners.

Looking at the picture, strike just missing the head ball. Try it and let me know what results you have.

Spring Session Starting!

Spring Session Divisions are playing, but it's never too late to get started! League play will be available several nights a week and new divisions will start whenever at least four teams sign up.

While it's too late to sign up for other leagues, we're forming teams all year long. Why be left out? Register your teams now for the Fall Session! Call me with any questions you have at 734-289-3322.

In most APA Leagues, and on most nights, things go according to plan and the teams have a great time playing APA pool. We realize however, that occasionally there may be a player or even a team in the League that other players just don't like being around. Usually these players or teams get away with their actions way too long before we are able to take appropriate action. Members simply don�t like to complain unless the problem turns major.
